Xu Shen（AD58-147）of the Eastern Han Dynasty（AD 25-220）pointed out in Shuowen Jiezi（Origin of Chinese Characters）that patriotism means the love for one’s motherland and people.People should take up weapons to defend their own countries.The love can be expressed emotionally，psychologically，mentally and behaviorally.
Patriotism has been displayed in the history of Beijing’s development，from the May 4th Movement（1919）to Lugou Bridge Incident（1937），from the founding ceremony of the People’s Republic of China to the magnificent Olympic Games.Beijingers are alwaysconcerned about the country’s development are brave to shoulder the missions of the times.With rapid socio-economic development，Beijingers’patriotism has been deepened and enriched:From the loyalty to the country，resistance to foreign aggression，to the love for the country and concern about national development and the dedication to national construction，patriotism has been Promoting Beijing’s development politically，morally and emotionally.
Due to Beijing’s special status as China’s capital and the development requirements patriotism is still playing an important role in our modern times.We need to promote unity and peace，defend national interests and image and make contributions to the revitalization and prosperity of our country；we also need to place emphasis on politics，pay attention to the overall situation，focus on service，exercise civil rights correctly，fulfill civil obligations，maintain political and social stability and make contributions to the achievement of a harmonious society.We should also put our patriotic feelings into practice，love our work and strive to fulfill the goal of“People’s Beijing，High-tech Beijing，Green Beijing”and make Beijing a World City with Chinese Characteristics.
