Brief Introduction to Xinyu

Situated in the center of Jiangxi Province and 135 kilometers southwest of Nanchang, Xinyu City covers a land of 3178 square kilometers with a population of 1.1 million. It has jurisdiction over Fenyi County, Yushui District, Fairy Maiden Lake Scenic Area and the High-tech Economic Development Zone. In 2006 per capita disposable income of urban residents in Xinyu has achieved RMB 10,151, with a year-on-year growth of 12.1%; per capita net income of farmers has reached RMB4320,a rise of 12.5%. The retail sales of social consumptions have amounted to RMB 5.41 billion, increased by 16.2%. The main per capita ecoiomic indicators rank top of the province.

Xinyu is the most industrialized city in Jiangxi. Now it has more than 9200 industrial enterprises, among which there are 104 enterprises with sales income over one million yuan. Xinyu owns itself the reputation of Steel Capital, for its industrial economy accounts for over 80% of Jiangxi’s economy. Xinyu Iron & Steel Corporation Limited(Xinyu Steel for short), which yields 80% of Jiangxi’s steel and 40% of China’s ferromanganese, is the largest steel and ferroalloy production base in China. More than 30 kinds of products are exported to over 10 countries such as the USA, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam. In 2004 Xinyu Steel became the first corporation of Jiangxi that had achieved annual sales income of over RMB 10 billion.

The climate in Xinyu is mild and humid with distinct four seasons, sufficient sunshine, abundant rainfall, long frost-free term and short severe winter. Its annual average temperature is 17.7℃, rainfall 1594.8mm, sunshine time 1655 hours and frost-free term 280 days, which is not only suitable for the grow of warm-season crops but also beneficial for autumn-sown crops to live through the winter. Xinyu now has become Jiangxi’s commodity grain base as well as one of China’s high-quality cotton production bases.

Xinyu has a long history and splendid culture. It was built as a county in the Three Kingdoms(184A.D.-280A.D.). Xinyu is home to many talented people,such as Lu Zhao-Jiangxi’s first No.1 Scholar，Wang Qinruo-the first prime minister in the south of the Yangtze River of the Northern Song Dynasty，Yan Song-the powerful official of the Ming Dynasty，Fu Baoshi-the great master of traditional Chinese painting，He Dayi-the medical giant.It was in Xinyu that Song Yingxing，the author of Tian Gong Kai Wu（Heavenly Creations）in the Ming Dynasty，finished the scientific works of the world.And it was also here that Chairman Mao presided over famous“Luofang Conference”and world-known“Investigations in Xingguo”.

Fairy Maiden Lake，a state-level key scenic spot，is the birthplace of the legend about Fairies Coming Down to the Human World from the Heaven.The lake integrates water culture and fairy culture.One-thousand-year-old temples，pottery kiln sites，the underwater ancient town and ancient bridges over the lake are regarded as the Four Wonders.In order to quicken the development of tourism，Xinyu makes huge investment in decorating and renovating historic sites and other tourist spots.

Now the main scenic spots are Kuixing Pavilion，Confucian Temple，Hongyang Cave，Chongqing Temple，Changshan Temple，Yuanshui Park，Sandie Park，Xianlai Park，Art Center and Culture Square.
