The long-awaited opening of the Qianjiang Passage, and its connecting section, joins Hangzhou’s turbulent transportation network on April 16, marking thesuccessful completion of the last ‘ chapter’ in Hangzhou Bay’s Trio project initiative, and the completion of what is called the Eastern Qianjiang River transportation artery. The construction took a total of 12,000 workers, based in Shanghai, Jiaxing and Hangzhou, about five years to complete. The completion of theproject, ranking as the world’s largest shield tunneling project, is also a symbol of Chinese engineering prowess regarding the know-how of how to successfully buildan underwater expressway. Known as the S9 Su-Shao Expressway, the underwater passage is a 43.6km-long, six-lane line that starts from the Yanguan entrance of the Hang-Pu Expressway and ends at the Qixian exit of the Hang-Yong Expressway. The opening of the expressway will effectively relieve traffic pressure on Qianjiang No.2 Bridge and the Xiasha Bridge. The line also offers seamless connection with the Hu-HangExpressway, and is also the province’s ‘ greenest’ expressway project. The toll for standard cars is RMB 45.
