1 min readThe use of the Imperial Examination began during the Sui Dynasty,and was a system used to choose government officials.The exams had a few sections:interview,answering questions about Confucianism by writing,and composition writing.In the Tang Dynasty,the exams were somewhat different.Besides interview,they included the followingsections:writing from memory of the Classics,composition writing about Confucianism,answering questions about practical problems by writing,and poem-ode writing.
Through exams,emperors identified individuals who would either immediately or eventually serve as prime ministers,ministers of major national departments,provincial governors,county magistrates and so on.These exams were used by individuals for high-level and high-powerpositions.The rewards that came with such positions included financial rewards,prestige,power,and various advantages for the entire extended family.
