Acupuncture of Chinese medicine

2 min read

Acupuncture is a therapy that uses the insertion of tiny thread-like needles to specific points along meridians that cross the body.As long as Qi flows freely through these pathways, health is maintained. When the flow of Qi is disturbed for any reason, there is disruption in health, resulting in pain or ilness. For example, some needling techniques are used for the primary purpose of increasing the flow of Qi in a meridian;other techniques reduce the flow of Qi in the meridians. These tonifying and draining methods are part of the more general aim of balancing the flow of Qi in the body.

When the acupuncturist inserts a needle into the skin and manipulates it,the patient may have the feeling of soreness, numbness, heaviness, swelling,or tingling.

Sometimes the needling sensation is experienced as propagating from the point of needling to another part of the body.Meanwhile, the acupuncturist may experience tightness around the needle.TCM calls this needling sensation“arrival of Qi”.This reaction is very important for successful acupuncture treatment, because if the needling sensation happens readily, the therapeutic effect will be better;if Qi is difficult to be secured, the effect is not so good.

The effectiveness of an acupuncture treatment is strongly dependent upon an accurate diagnosis. The needling skills and techniques of the acupuncturist will also greatly influence the outcome. The fundamental manipulation techniques include lifting and-thrusting and twirling-and-rotating. Acupuncture can be remarkably effective in many conditions, both acute and chronic.
