Taoguang Temple
1 min readThe path from Yongfu Temple to Taoguang Temple is a long, winding, laborious climb, but it’s worth the sweat to get to this modest monastery on the hill.Unlike Lingyin and Yongfu’s royal yellow walls,Taoguang features grey tiles, white walls, and red pillars, giving it a classic Chinese garden look.It is named after the Chan Master Taoguang,a poet monk who lived as a hermit here from 821 to 824.Many poets have dedicated their works to Taoguang Temple, although the monastery’s most enthusiastic devotee seems to have been Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, who wrote over a dozen poems praising its view and the solitary,Zen ambience. At the top of the monastery you can relish a scenic view of Lingyin Hill,West Lake, and the Qiantang River.
It takes about half an hour to walk from Yongfu Temple to Taoguang Temple, which is free to enter.
