Hangzhou Churches
2 min readChurchgoers visiting Hangzhou have a number of options for services. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, known to locals simply as the“Catholic Church”,lies on Zhongshan Northern Road in the downtown area.Built in 1661,it is one of the oldest cathedrals in China.Visitors should be warned though that during services on Sunday mornings, the venue quickly fills up and the crowd spills over into the car park area and toward the front gate.
Just around the corner you can find the Hangzhou Tianshui Church, which stands, appropriately enough,on Yesutang Alley or”The Church of Jesus Alley“.Dating back to 1874,it is also a piece of Hangzhou history, where services tend to be in Mandarin.
Visitors also have the option of the Chong-yi Church on Xintang Road,Jianggan District.First established in 1866 by British missionary James Hudson Taylor, the church’s new site was built in 2005 and covers an area of 12,480 square meters witha capacity for 5,500 people. It is considered the largest Chinese church in the world.
Hangzhou Sicheng Christian Church on Jiefang Road,on the other hand,is the oldest Christian church in Hangzhou with a history of 89 years. The building is a combination of Western and Chinese style brick-wood architecture.
For English services, the Hangzhou International Christian Fellowship,or Gulou Tang(Drum Tower Church),is the best option for visitors.Located near the Drum Tower and the tourist district of Qinghefang,it is well-situated for wandering around town once the service is over.
