1 min readAs the first principal of the State Arts Academy in Hangzhou,which would eventually become the Chinese Academy of Art,Lin Fengmian(1900-1991)was one of the most important modern reformers in Chinese art history.First educated in China and then at the cole nationale suprieure des Beaux-arts de Paris,Lin’s return to China was marked by an ambitious desire to bring a sense of modernism to the Chinese arts-which at the time was quite controversial.His works feature influence from modern schools such as impressionism,cubism,fauvism,and expressionism,with a resonance to traditional Chinese elements.His artistic revolution also saw a change in art education;he called onstudents to free their mind before picking up the brush.Lin’s ten years in Hangzhou were the most productive period of his life,and today lovers of his work can find the Lin Fengmian Former Residence by the Hangzhou Botanical Garden.
