Chenghuang Pavilion

1 min read

If you find yourself on the Hefang Street in need of a stunning view and tea, then head for one of the most iconic images of the Hangzhou skyline, the 41-meter Chenghuang Pavilion or”City God Pavilion“at Wushan Hill. The name comes from the City God Temple at the foot of the hill,a common temple in Chinese folk religion.

Upright officials in the city’s history are often worshipped as the city’s god and protector;in Hangzhou’s case, that’s a Ming Dynasty local official named Zhou Xin,famed for being fair and honest.Incorporating the architectural styles of the Southern Song and Yuan, the pavilion sits on firm stone foundation that resembles the old city wall of Hangzhou.Inside the seven-storey pavilion is an exhibition hall with displays of tea culture, dragon boat racing, and stories from history.Perhaps the most magnificent item is a 30-meter long colored woodwork from the Southern Song Dynasty depicting scenes from the imperial palace and the streets and alleyways of early Hangzhou. On the third to the sixth floor, visitors can grab a cup of tea while appreciating the view.
