2 min readNanshan Pasture is located among the vast mountain ranges of the northern slopes of Kalawucheng Mountains of Northern Tianshan Mountains in the south of Urumqi, and it is 75km from the city at the transitional zone of middle mountains and low mountains with an elevation of 2,252m.
The pasture is surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks and undulate hills and covered with lush trees and beautiful flowers it is really charming for the springs, flocks of cattle and sheep, and the dotted yurts. There are dozens of ravines in different sizes distributed in parallel from west to east, making it a high-class natural pasture and a resort for summering and tour. In winter, it is also a famous ski resort.
It was a famous hunting area in the Tang dynasty, and a pasture in the Qing Dynasty. In 1989, it was approved as an autonomous region level scenic spot by the government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The famous scenic spots are Banfang Ditch, Shuixigou Ditch, Poplar Ditch, Chrysanthemums Terrace, Ulastai, Alfalfa Platform, and so on.
Chrysanthemums Terrace is a tourist area in Kazak grassland pastoral area with the characteristic of a large area of golden chrysanthemums and it is a terrace of the alluvial fan inclined gently of 2,000-2,400 m above sea level. The ravines are often 80-120 m below the terrace, and there are winding streams at the bottom of the ravines, lush spruce trees on the shady slopes, and green grass on the sunny slopes. The top of the terrace is flat and wide, which can be 300-500m wide and about 6km long. In spring and summer, the terrace golden chrysanthemums are blooming on the terrace, presenting a typical Tianshan irie s shee prairie scene with the dancing bees and butterflies, and the flocks of sheep and horses.
