Turpan Desert Botanical Garden

Turpan Desert Botanical Garden, built in 1976 with an area of 34hm, is subordinate to Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Desert, Chinese Academy of Sciences; It is one of the 12 botanical gardens directly under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the only Desertn Botanical Garden in northwest arid desert area, and the world’s lowest Botanical Garden.

It is located about 10km southeast of Turpan City at an elevation of-95-76m. There are lots of Yardang landforms, flat moving sand land moon-shaped sand dunes, the ruins of ancient castle towns buried in the sand, and the famous underground water conservancy project-karez, and so on. It is also the world’s second lowland with the name of”wind warehouse” and “fire land”.

The garden mainly pays attention to the introduction, domestication and expansion of the sand binders, and also has the functions of researching on the prevention of sand damage, the universal education of desert plants and desert sightseeing, and so on, so it has gained deep love from the broad masses of visitors.
