The Bund in the 1850s
The Shanghai World Expo opened on May 3, 2010 drove visitors to the tourist hotspots around the city.
Precinct on the Nanjing Road, Yuyuan Garden, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, ld always see a large number of tourists coming into the city after their visit of njoy unique Shanghai tour with cosmopolitan charm. From the 1860s to the 1890s these buildings were reno-vated several times, eventually appearing as a row of Renaissance-style buildings.
The North Customs House, Shanghai built in 1857 After Shanghai opened its ports for foreign trade, a new customs opposite the check point was established by the Bund to collect taxes from the foreign vessels. It is also called the North Customs House because of its location at the north of the main customs house. The North Customs House was a typical Chinese architecture for magistrates, with its main gate to open at the Bund Road on the east. The decorated archway had a traditional Chinese inscription which reads the North Customs House. The building has typical Chinese characteristics, standing out among the buildingsin the early years of the Bund.
The late 19th to early 20th century(1895-1919)marked the second phase of changes to the Bund.
With the rise in land prices and introduction of cement and other new materials, nearly half of the buildings on the Bund underwent reconstruction, and with the use of reinforced concrete structures they grew from between three to four storey up to six and seven. The style of modern architecture emerged in the form of compromise as it began to focus on internal and external decoration and the application of varied supplementary facilities.
The Shanghai’s second generation customs house was built in 1893
In 1893, on the 50th anniversa nghai’s port, shanghai’s second generation Customs Houseg of Shangh was completed. The building was constructed in the style of a typical British church, with a bell tower on the main building. This was the first time a public building in shanghai a bell tower. Both the interior and exterior facilities were particularly exquisite, including security railings, stone lions, clock tower lightning rod and a spacious customs hall with central heating.
