Though authorities began to tackle the congestion issues on the Suzhou Creek right after 1949, by the 1960s there was still many manure barges along the river.

The”three inlets and one lane” of the Suzhou Creek’s Putuo District consist of Zhujiawan Inlet, Tanziwan Inlet, Pan-d the highest concentration of slum dwellers in Shanghai, and was known as one of thes, the only Kok and lower end of the town. The combination of highg conditions resulted in an unbearable stench refuse-filled streets, and the spread of disease. Nowadays, the area is filled with glimmering blocks of modern, spacious and elegant apartment buildings, and few would believe the stories of its squalid past.

On August 1, 2002, Suzhou Creek held its fifth Dragon Boat Race, featuring teams from Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The course ran along the river from Shandong Road to Zhapu Road, covering a length of 800 meters. On Janu-ary 8, 2003, the Shanghai municipal government officially aed the completion of the first phase of the Suzhou Creek Rehabilitation Project. The project focused on controlling water pollution, proper use of water resources,and improvement of the river’s ecological landscape. The project was launched in 1998 and a mere four years later water quality showed significant recovery. The quality of life for residents on both banks increased considerably and the river’s appearance and environmental outlook showed substantial improveme.
