Spring of Xinjiang. If the average temperature of consecutive five days is over 10℃ then the first day of such five days is the beginning of spring. Generally speaking, the spring of Southern Xin jiang and Turpan Basin starts in mid-to-late February. Most districts in Southern Xin jiang ends spring in mid-to-late May, so the spring lasts about three nonths(Yanqi Basin starts spring a little later, from early march). Turpan Basin ends sprin in middle April, lasting about two months. In all districts of northern Xin jiang from thesouth to the north, spring starts in mid-to-late march: in the north of Northern Xin jiang and the east of Tianshan Mountains spring ends in mid-to-late June lasting for about three months. Along the middle section of Tianshan Mountains, spring ends in later May or middle June, lasting for two months to two and a half months. In Ili Valley, spring lasts longer, starting in early March and ending in middle June. In spring, there are lots of cold air outbreaks in Xinjiang, as well as frequent cold air activities and severe frost damage In springtime, there are lots of heavy wind in Xinjiang, ranked number one in China in terms of heavy wind frequency and strength. The heavy wind in Southern Xin jiang is much less than that in Northern Xinjiang, but its sandstorm and floating dust is very serious. In spring, the temperature of Xinjiang is extremely variable. Generally, it rises rapidly, but the spring temperature of the same district in different years and different districts in the same year varies greatly In springtime of Xinjiang, precipitation varies greatly. Firstly, it varies greatly in different districts: in the west of Northern Xin jiang and the mountainous area along Tianshan Mountains and Tianshan Mountains, west to Urumqi (except Jinghe River), the amount of spring rain is up to 50-80 mm; in the mountainous area of western Tianshan Mountains, the amount of precipitation is up to 100-200 mm, accounting for 1/3 of the annual precipitation; and for the Kashgar which is in the west of Southern Xin jiang its spring precipitation accounts for 40%-50% of the annual precipitation. Secondly, it varies greatly in different years; in the years with more spring precipitation in Northern Xinjiang, the amount of precipitation can be double of that in regular years, while it is only more than 10 mm in the years with small amount of precipitation; during rainy years in Southern Xinjiang, it can be 4-5 times more than average, while in rainless years, there might be no single drop of rain.

Summer of Xin jiang. If the average temperature of consecutive five days is over 22 C, then the first day of such five days is the beginning of summer generally. most districts in Southern Xinjiang start summer in late May and ends in early-to-mid September, lastingfor more than four months. The summer of Turpan Basin lasts longest, normally starting from middle of the April to end of the September, lasting for more than five months. Thesummer of Yanqi Basin lasts shorter, for only more than two months, from mid June to the end of august. The summer along the middle section of Tianshan Mountains(from Shihezi to Jinghe) in northern Xinjiang is from late May or early June until middle September, formore than three months. The summer in the north of Northern Xinjiang, Ili Valley and alongthe eastern section of Tianshan Mountains in Northern Xin jiang is from mid-tolate June to late August, lasting for over two months. The summer in Junggar Basin is from late May to mid September, lasting for nearly four months. During the summer of Xinjiang, the temperature is high and stable and the highest temperature during the whole year is in June to August with more precipitation, generally accounting for 50%-60% of the precipitation of the whole year, thus it is the ma jor recharge period for rivers. Snow melting because of temperature rise and local rainstorms would possibly cause torrential flood. In summer, piedmont plains have much souther sometimes even thunderstorms or hails; there is lots of hot wind, more in Southern Xinjiang than Northern Xin jiang, more in the interior of basin than rim of basin, more in lower place than higher place; and in the mountain pass and its affected area. there is particularly much of dry wind blowinig.

Autumn of Xin jiang. If the average temperature of consecutive five days is lower than 22℃ and there will be no average temperature of consecutive five days over 22℃, then the first day of the five days is deemed as the beginning of autumn. Generally, Tarim Basin in Southern Xinjiang, except such places as Yanqi and Baicheng, enters into autumn as early as late August, while most of the other districts start autumn from early-to-mid September to mid-to-late November, lasting for two and a half months. The Autumn of Turpan Basin lasts from the end of September till late November, for less than two monthsThe north of Northern Xin jiang and the eastern area along tianshan mountains in northern Xinjiang enter into autumn in late August and end in early November, lasting for two and a half months. The southwest of Junggar in Northern Xinjiang and Kumul Basin enter into autumn in early-to-mid September and end in mid November lasting for 2 months After entering into autumn, such local gusty weather as thunderstorm and hail decreases greatly, the precipitation in mountainous areas decreases rapidly and sunny days increases, so it is called”the invigorating autumn climate. The temperature decreases rapidly, and flatuses of autumn breeze bring people coolness. The temperature difference in autumn is not as large as in spring. Cold-air outbreak starts to occur. The variation of first frost between years is large: the first frost in Northern Xinjiang normally occurs in between late September and early October and always occurs in company with cold-air outbreak invasion. The first frost in Southern Xinjiang normally occurs in late October or early November; the east of Southern Xin jiang and Kumul district are a little earlier, occurring in mid October. The gale decrease significantly and the days lasted is less than half of that in summer

Winter of Xinjiang. If the average temperature of consecutive five days is below 10℃, then the first day of such five days indicates the beginning of winter. Normally, the winter in all districts of Northern Xin jiang lasts long, the north and west of Northern Xinjiang enters into winter in mid November and ends in mid-to-late March, lasting for more than five months. From the west of Urumqi to Jinghe, winter lasts for four months from mid November to mid March of the next year: for the lli Valley, winter lasts for three and a half months from late November to mid March of the next year; from the east of Urumqi to Qitai winter lasts for more than four months from early-to-mid November to mid-to-late March of the next year. Normally the winter in all districts of Southern Xinjiang lasts shorter than that in Northern Xin jiang; in Kuqa, Aksu and Turpan and other places, winter starts from late November and ends in mid-to-late February of the next year, lasting forthree months; the west of Southern Xinjiang enters into winter in late November and ends in mid-to-late February, lasting for less than three months: the winter of yangi basin lasts onger, for nearly four months from mid November to early March of the next year. For the winter of Xinjiang, Northern Xinjiang has more severe cold days and haze than that of Southern Xinjiang. The north of Northern Xinjiang, Tacheng Basin, Ii Valley and the north foot area of Tianshan Mountains covered by stable and deep snow, is one of the places withthe most abundant snow cover in Xinjiang, and even in China. The snow cover here lasts for as long as four months while Southern Xin jiang and Eastern Xin jiang seldom has stable snow cover. In winter, the gale in Xin jiang is not frequent, except that such places as Fengkou, Habahe and Tacheng in Northern Xinjiang have 4-7 times of gale every month, and the other places rarely have gale.
