2 min read

The traditional Uygur houses are usually square plat-roofed cottages.Theskylight provides good illumination from above,so people can dry melons, fruits and grains in the sun.In front of the house, there is a relatively deepfront porch. The house consists of a living room which is also used as bedroom,a dining room,a kern and a small room for storage.A house has at least 3 rooms, some of the houses have 5 or 6 rooms and some even have 7 or 8;in the middle of the house is the central room and on two sides are living rooms.

Inside the house, there is a solid heatable brick bed and a fireplace.

The interior decoration of the Uygur ethnic groupis quite distinctive. Theirtraditional housings are usually decorated with a heatable brick bed with a large area and three sides against the wall, being connected to the oven. Mat, carpet, tapestry, rug and footcloth are often laid on the brick bed, which is available for a score of men to sleep and it is the place for resting, dining and receiving guests. The wall surface is usually decorated with a piece of colorful wall cloth or a wall carpet. On one side of the big brick bed in the central room, there is often a big cabinet carved with flower printing or decorative pattern and where the quilt, bedding and pillow are fold neatly. Uygur women are particular about the making of beddings and they usually take silk fabric as shell fabric. Every family would specially prepare several beddings for guests. In the past, there were no beds, desks, cabinets and other furniture in the traditional housings of Uygur. Therefore, people were always kneeling on the brick bed for meal and entertainment. They usually decorate the wall surface with unequalsized niches, which integrate with the entire wall surface withdifferent patterns and are available for placing beddings, vessels, food andother family daily necessities. And some niches are elaborately designed to form a variety of geometric patterns, not only being the place for placing the articles for daily use, but also the artwork for decorating the house.

The Uygur people also like to decorate the wall with plaster. In the living chamber, there is a fireplace, above which is an outstanding arch and under which is a furnace platform of an iron heel shape. It is built against the wall with soil and available for getting warm in winter, heating up water and cooking meals. As for families who are more particular, they usually decorate them with gypsum flowers. The ceilings of the Uygur folk housings are designed as dense beam with an open roof and the wall crown is decorated with banded gypsum flowers or carved patterns, forming as a whole with the ceiling of a slight colored pattern. The specific living atmosphere of Uygur is embodied in their interior decoration. The Uygur people always clean up their indoor and outdoor environment because they love cleanness.
