Cotton of the World Record
2 min readIn 2006, the unginned cotton yield per mu exceeded 600 kg. When hearing the news, two cotton experts from the United States and Israel rushed to Xinjiang to re-measure using the most scientific method of measuring cotton yield, the result was even 40 kg more than what they heard, reaching 660 kg. As is known to all, the highest unginned cotton yield permu was less than 500 kg at that time in the foreign agriculturally advanced countries. The two experts marveled at the new record (“Unginned cotton”is the cotton directly picked from the cotton plant, without any processing and the cotton fiber and seeds are not separated. “Ginned cotton”refers to the cotton fiber separated from the seeds after ginning.)
The record was rewritten again and again.in29, the world record of806 kg unginned cotton per mu was created; and in 2012, this record was refreshed again, reaching the amazing 838.31 kg. That was the latest scientific research achievements of Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, exceeding the world’s highest yield about over 100 kg.
Harvesting cotton by machine
Xinjiang per unit area cotton yield (grinned cotton) after the founding of New China per unit area cotton yield (kg/mu) The people in Xinjiang did not regard it as a rare thing, for Xinjiang showed the talent in planting cotton as early as the founding of New China In the spring of 1950, the corp. 22 of the People’s Liberation Army entered the Manas reclamation area, first scattering the cotton seeds, and made a good harvest in the same year. And then the large-scale cultivation of cotton was started. In 1953, the yield per mu of the 20,000 mu cotton exceeded 200 kg, creating record of the national cotton yield permu.
After the reform and opening up, cotton planting in Xinjiang has developed rapidly, with per unit yield and total yield growing year by year. At present, three high quality cotton planting belts have been formed at Yarkant River Basin, the middle and lower region of Tarim River, and the southern edge of Junggar Basin, producing more than 85% of the cotton in Xinjiang.
In recent years, Xinjiang, together with the Lower-and-Middle section of Yangtze River and the Yellow River basin are regarded as three major cotton-producing areas in China. It is also the largest high-quality commodity cotton base, and the only long stapled cotton base, which effectively guarantee the demand of national cotton safety and cotton industry.
In 2012, the total output reached 3.18 million tons, accounting for over half of the national cotton production for the first time, and by the same year, Xinjiang had been ranked first in the cotton planting area, per unit area yield, total output, and export for 20 years in a row.
