4 min readOnce the project is put into operation, it can transport natural gas of 30 billion cubic meters to the markets along the line and will effectively fill the clean energy gap at economically developed regions such as southeast coastal, increasing the consumption share of natural gas by over 1% in the primary energy. The project can annually replace 76.8 million tons of coal, reduce carbon dioxide emission of 130 million tons, sulfur dioxide of 1.44 million tons, and dust of 0.66 million tons.
The accumulative total investment of these three projects has exceeded 400 billion Yuan making them the energy projects and infrastructure projects of the largest investment in China. Through these three steel dragon likened pipes, clean natural gas has entered into thousands of households, and the lives of eastern and western region have been inextricably intertwined.
West-East coal transmission
The predicted resource of coal resources in Xinjiang amounts to 2.19 trillion tons,accounting for over 40% of the total amount of China, and ranking first in the country. In order to protect the country’s energy security, this coal transmission project has become an important strategic channel.
At present, Xinjiang is building the 14modern large scale coal base in China relying on four coalfields of Zhundong, Tuha, Ili, and Kubai. Among which, Zhundong coalfield is the largest integrated coalfield in China or even the world. Tuha and Zhundong coalfields are relatively close to the eastern coal demand market, becoming the main battlefield of the “Xinjiang-East Coal Transmission”.
In 2008 and 2009, the amount of West-East coal transmission in Xinjiang was only about ten million tons. By 2012, the amount had increased to 50 million tons. And it can be expected that the amount will reach 500 million tons and 800 million tons by the time of 2020,and2025.

With the policy support of the state and the autonomous regions of Xinjiang for the development of coal resources, the large-scale enterprises made full use of the resource advantages of Xinjiang to build large coal bases, achieving the joint operation of coal and electricity, and changing coal transportation to power transmission, and finally achieving the purpose of energy transportation to the eastern regions.
West-East power transmission project

The eastern region develops faster, but confronts the energy bottleneck of shortage in electricity supply. Xinjiang is rich in resources, but as for the developmental stage, the pace of development is relatively slow. Through power interconnection, eastern and western resources will complement each other’s advantages; the transmission of electricity from wind and coal of Xinjiang to the eastern region lacking of electricity would drive common development of both the west and east.
West-East 750KV Power transmission construction

Since then, Xinjiang Power Grid formally incorporated into the National Grid starting the transmission of the thermal power and wind power in Xinjiang. In January 2013, Xinjiang Power Grid transmitted power to East China Power Grid for the first time of 532.57 million KWH, amounting to the transportation of 186,400 tons of standard coal.
Like the WestEast- natural gas transmissio project, the west-east- electricity transmission project is also the landmark project of Western Development in China. Xinjiang has energetically developed the coal, coal chemical and power industry, carried the projects of coal to electricity, coal to oil, and coal to chemicals, accelerated the construction of national high energy industry gathering area, and has truly become the strategic location of energy in China.
