On the reconstruction of Beijing’s old city
1 min readThis essay examines only two examples, from the geographical perspectives of city location and design,in an attempt to assess what attitude we should have and what basic rules we should observe in the process of reconstructing Beijing’s Old City.
In July of 1983,the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee and the State Council approved in principle the Master Plan for the City Construction of Metropolitan Beijing. This plan clearly evaluates Beijing’s Old City, and while pointing out those strengths and notable traditional characteristics which should be preserved in the process of reconstruction,it also emphasizes the creation of a new style characteristic of the people’s capital in the new era.e Thus,we have reason to believe that by the end of this century a new Beijing City will emerge, one which will maintain not only its ancient cultural tradition, but with a new face reflecting a prosperous, new socialist culture. At the same time we also hope that this new culture, which is still developing, can make an important contribution to the civilization of all mankind.
