Baise

Overview Located in western Guangxi, Baise is the region’s largest prefecture-level city. Covering an area of 36, 300 sq km, it consists of 11 counties and one district, and has a population of 3.92 million. Ethnic minorities account for 87% of its population, the majority being Zhuang.

History In ancient times, it belonged to Baiyue Region. In the Qin Dynasty (221-206BC), it came under the jurisdiction of Xiangjun Prefecture. Baise got its name when the Qing Emperor Yongzheng set up Baise Subprefecture in 1729. In October 1983, the State Council approved the establishing of county-level Baise City. In 2002, Baise became a prefecture-level city.

In 1929, Deng Xia and other revolutionaries led and launched the historic Baise Uprising, founded the Youjiang Revolutionary Base area, and established the Seventh Corps of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Economy}jb1} With a forest coverage rate of 58.6%, Baise’s output of subsidiary forest products is in the front rank of Guangxi. The Youjiang River Valley is a famous base for transporting fresh produce from south to north, and is known as the Land of Mangos. It is rich in power resources, with over 6 million kw of hydropower resources that can be used to generate electricity.

There are various kinds of mineral resources. Its reserves of bauxite, copper, crystal, brown coal and gold rank first in Guangxi. Its bauxite reserves, in excess of one billion tons, account for over half China’s total. A group of eco-friendly bauxite bases have been set up.
