Many pieces of pottery of the primitive society were excavated from China’s Yellow and Yangtze river valleys,notably the Yangshao,Maiayao,Dawenkou and Longshan cultures of the Yellow River valley and the Hemudu,Daxi,Qujialing and Liangzhu cultures of the Yangtze River valley over 6 000 years ago.Painted pottery gradually fell out of favor,while black,white,gray,and red poftery continued to develop and change in the succeeding period of time.
The History of Chinese Pottery
Pottery has a long history in China.It was invented in the early New Stone Age.According to archeological evidence,as early as 8 000 years ago,pottery bowls,plates,ketles,jars,stemmed cups,broad-mouthed receptacles,cooking vessels,etc.were used in people’s lives as is indica-ted from the unearthed pottery in Peiligang Culture in Henan Province and Cishang Culture in Hebei Province.Among the articles unearthed in Cis-hang,a piece of pottery painted with curved pattern was discovered,the earliest painted pottery discovered in China.The subsequent more advanced earthenware unearthed represented the technique development at different phases in the New Stone Age,for example,painted pottery fromYangyun Culture,white pottery from Dawenkou Culture,black pottery from Longshan Culture,pottery of painted eggshell from Quialing Culture,etc.
The Development of Chinese Pottery
The production of Chinese pottery started in the Shang Dynasty and matured considerably in the Eastern Han Dynasties.This long period was the inception period of potery,and the pottery in that period was called the “primitive pottery”.Both pottery and bronze were produced under high temperatures.“Ceramics and castings”used to be a combined term.
