A Glimpse of Haikou
2 min readHaikou, known also as the”Coconut City”, is the capital of Hainan Province. The city is the provincial administrative center of Hainan, the focus of itseconomic, technological and cultural center as well as its transportation and communications hub. Haikou is known as China’s largest special economic zone. Haikou stands at the northern end of Hainan Island, on the west bank ofthe Nandu River estuary. This river is the longest one on the island and the city’s name appropriately means “Mouth of the Sea”. With the seas on three sides, Haikou enjoys a long coastline that features excellent bathing beaches and seaside resorts.
Haikou borders Qiongzhou Strait on the north, and is separated from the mainland for about 18 nautical miles. It is contiguous to Wenchang City on the southeast, and is close to Chengmai County on the west. Haikou is plain of the seashore for the most, and mainly consists of new and old deposits. High in the south and low in the north, it is low and flat. Haikou has a tropical marine climate with annual average temperature of 23.8oC. There is a long summer, no winter and a pleasant climate. The city has jurisdiction over four administrative districts,a land area of 2,304.84 sq km and a coastline of 131 km. At the end of 2008, the city’s resident population stood at 1,835,000 people.
