Beibu Gulf Southwest China’s Most Convenient Sea Access

Established in March 2006, the Beibu Gulf Economic Zone is composed of four prefecture-level Yulin and Chongzuo, two cities also at the prefecture level. The zone covers a land area of 42, 500 sq km and had a population of 12.99 million in 2008.

The Zone has a coastline of 1, 595 km with a planned 228 km of port waterfront, and a long-term handling capacity expected to reach 300 million tons. Fangchenggang, Qinzhou and Beihai ports have been porated into Beibu Gulf Port which now boasts 191 productive erths, 40 of which are above the 10, 000-ton capacity. The maximum berthing capacity has reached 200, 00 2009, It transportation network is taking shape with Nanning at its center.

Highways, railways and air routes connecting the Zone with surrounding provinces, cities and ASEAN countries are continuously opening up. Construction of the Nanning-Guangzhou High- Speed Railway link to the PRD is picking up pace, and will eventually reduce journey time between the two cities to hours. The Guizhou-Guangxi Railway reconstruction project is complete, reducing journey improvement proj will allow trains to travel at twice the current speed, is underway.

The Nanning-Friendship Pass Highway has opened, making possible one-day round trips between Nanning and Hanoi. Taking the Nanning-Kunming Railway from Kunming to the Beibu Gulf Port saves about 250 km in distance compared with other domestic ports. The Beibu Gulf is now the most convenient sea access for southwest China’s import and export trade.
