2 min readAccording to the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China,the administrative division of China is as follows:
1.The country is divided into provinces,autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government;
2.Provinces and autonomous regions are divided into autonomous S prefectures,counties,autonomous counties and cities;
3.Counties,autonomous counties and cities are divided into townships,ethnic townships,and towns.
All autonomous regions,autonomous prefectures and autonomouscounties are ethnic autonomous areas.The state may establish special administrative regions when necessary.Currently,there are
34 provincial-level administrative areas in China:4 municipalities directly under the Central Government,23 provinces,5 autonomous regions and 2 special administrative regions.
Beijing(abbr:Jing)is the capital of the People’s Republic of China,situated at the northwestern end of the North China Plain.Initially named Ji,Beijing was the capital of the State of Yan during the Spring and Autumn Period(770-476 B.C.)and the Warring States Period(476-221 B.C.),and the secondary capital under the name of Yanjing during the Liao Dynasty(916-1125).It also served as the capital during the Jin(1115-1234A.C),Yuan(1271-1368A.C),Ming(1368-1644A.C)and Qing(1644-1911A.C)dynasties and the early period of the Republic of China(1912-1949),and was calledZhongdu,Dadu,Beiping and Beijing successively.It was established as a municipality in 1928.
Beijing is China’s political,cultural,scientific and educational center as well transport junction.It is also a world-famous tourist attraction,with abundant places of historic interest and scenic spots,including the Palace Museum,the Temple of Heaven,the Great Wall,the Ming Tombs(tombs of 13 Ming emperors),the Summer Palace and the Fragrant Hill.
