Biwu Longtan in Deqing

2 min read

As a part of Mogan Scenic Site, Biwu Longtan, which means”Dark Green Valley and Dragon Pool”, is located in Biwu Village at the foot of the Mogan Mountain. Surrounded by ancient trees that touch the sky, tourists will find it is also a cool place full of mysteries.

There is a waterfall above the Dragon Pool named Pubi, which has three sections. It drops off at an elevation of 15 feet high. The sight of waterfall looks like a dragon flies into the deep pool from the high cliff. They say,a dragon lived at the bottom of the pool. In ancient time, the dragon was regarded as the symbol of God in charge of rainfall. When a serious drought occurred, the local people often came here to pray for rain. For that reason the pool has been called Longtan(Dragon Pool). The water in the pool is so clear and cold that visitors will feel chilly by the pool side, even if in summer. On the top of cliff lies a flat and smooth stone called Fairy Stone. Rumour has it that Han Zhongli and Han Xiangzi(two immortals in Chinese tale) once played chess on it. Thecheck lines on the stone-chessboard are still vaguely seen up to now.

Biwu Longtan has been famous for its unique sight. In 1928, the famous poet and democratic patrio, Liu Yazi, came to Mogan Mountain and visited this pool. He composed two poems to express his thoughts, and the feelings aroused by what he saw and heard.A few years ago, Deqing Bamboo and Mountain Tourism Development Co., Ltd. explored the historical and culture resources in the area, and the two poems were carvedseparately on two giant rocks.

They not only add a new sight to this scenic area, but also enrich the cultural connotations. Today Biwu Longtan has become one of six major scenic spots in Mogan Mountain Scenic Site.
