Buddhist Pagoda

The most distinctive kind of Buddhist buildings in China is pagoda. Its original name is stupa in Sanskrit. Pagoda is also the main integrating part of the Buddhist architecture, with varied styles and strong native essence. The pagoda was mainly used to house sacred objects. It is the first memorial building to worship Buddha. As for the architecture, they can take the form of a storied tower, or, more rarely,a upturned bowl.

Among the 3,000 extant pagodas, there are all-timber pagodas, brick pagodas, stone pagodas, bronze pagodas and iron pagodas.

Buddhist Grotto

Another Buddhist architectural form is grotto. Buddhist Grotto is complexly constructed cave temples hewn on cliff walls, usually with huge patterns and exquisite engravings. It came from India with Buddhism and combined immediately with Chinese traditional architecture. It is usually decorated with the sculptures of Buddha and mural paintings.
