General Information Changjiang is originated in Geladandong Xue Shan Tibetan Plateau，draining into East China Sea in Shanghai，with a length of 6，300 km and an area of 1，807，199 square km.
Chang Jiang has headstreams:Tuotuo He；five sections of upper Chang Jiang:Jiangyuan ，Tongtian He ，Jinsha Jiang ，Chuan Jiang ，and Three Gorges.It is the largest river in China and the third largest one in the world and it flows through Qingha，Tibet，Yunnan，Sichuan，Hubei，Hunan，Jiangxi，Anhui，Jiangsu and Shanghai.It has more than 700 tributaries including Min Jiang ，Tuo Jiang ，Jialing Jiang ；forms the fertile river basin；provides major water transportation from east to west.The famous Three Gorges（Changjiang San Xia ）are Qutang Xia ，Wu Xia ，Xiling Xia ，and cover 204 km section from Baidicheng in Fengjie ，Sichuan，to Nanjinguan in Yichang ，Hubei.Chang Jiang cuts through mountains at its narrowest points，forming the magnificent gorges.
How the”Three Gorges”Came into Being （Once upon a time，the Jade Dragon，a son ofthe Dragon ofthe Eastern Sea，lived in a cave on the upper reaches ofthe river.One day，he decided to visit his family by way of the Yangtze，but shortly afterwards found him lost.Changing intothe form ofan old man，he asked his way ofa herd boy.The boy pointed north with his whip.The dragon rushed offin that di-rection but again got lost，so he flew into a mighty rage and rushed at the mountains，causing them to crumble and dam up the water.
Farmlands were flooded，earthquakes toppled houses，and men and animals perished.At this moment a goddess rushed to the spot on a cloud.She rebuked Jade Dragon，but he was unrepentant.She flung a string ofpearls into the air，it changed into a rope that bound the dragon to the stone pillar.The goddess then ordered Da Yu ，controller of rivers，to behead the murderous dragon on the nearby platform.She then excavated the river by cutting the Three Gorges.They used to be narrow，steep and the rapids were swift.The sailing was difficult，exciting but impressive.Monkeys and birds were crying on high bank.）Now the“Pity”is that this part of the river is widened and a“Great Scenery”is lost.
