2 min readChopsticks,knives and forks are the main dining tools in the world.China is the birthplace of chopsticks,and the use of chopsticks can be traced back to the Shang Dynasty.According to the Weizi Biography Section of the Historical Records,Zhou Wang,Emperor of the Shang Dynasty,started using Ivory Zhu,which is the former name for chopsticks in ancient times.Thus,Chinese people have been using chopsticks for at least 3000 years.Today,chopsticks are used as a main dining toolnot only in China,but also in most countries in East Asia,South Asia and Southeast Asia,such as Japan,North Korea,South Korea and Vietnam.
Before the use of chopsticks,Chinese people went through a period of eating food with their hands.But how did they deal with food in hot water or soup?They picked up food with twigs and wooden sticks,which are the earliest chopsticks.With the accumulation of experience and the improvement of manufacturing technology,scraped and pared wooden chopsticks and bamboo chopsticks emerged.Then copper chopsticks,jade chopsticks,painted chopsticks and ivory chopsticks came into being.The development of modern industry brings more manufactured materials such as plastic into the chopsticks industry.Iron and copper chopsticks are not practical;jade and ivory chopsticks are too expensive;therefore they have been gradually eliminated.Nowadays a Chinese family usually uses wooden chopsticks,bamboo chopsticks or plastic chopsticks.They vary in color,size and length.In China,the most common chopsticks are cylindrical in shape or have one sharp end and one round It’s safe to say that chopsticks are the quintessence of China.With these two small sticks,we can pinch,pick,pull,mix and dig.It is not only handy andflexible,but also convenient and cheap.Chopsticks are quite unique among international tableware,and are honored by the westerners as part of”Oriental civilization”.In modern life,the use of chopsticks may not be limited to tableware;they are also exquisite handicrafts for appreciation or as gifts for friends and relatives.
