Confucianism and TCM

1 min read

The Confucian school of thought was founded by Kongzi (Confucius) (551-479 BC) during China’s late Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC).

In 134 BC, Confucian scholar Dong Zhongshu (179-104 BC) convinced Western Han Dynasty (140 BC-9 AD) Emperor Han Wudi (reigned 140-87 BC) to elevate Confucianism to the status of official state ideology.

Confucian thought became the dominant philosophy of China for an extended period of time, exerting a profound influence on traditional Chinese culture and society.

Confucianism and traditional Chinese medicine are inextricably linked. From its position at the heart of Chinese culture, Confucianism influenced every aspect of TCM, from medical values and ethics to the philosophy of Yin and Yang that underlies traditional Chinese medical theory and clinical practice.
