Since its debut in 1993, the Nanning International Folk Song Festival has received wide acclaim at home and abroad, and its influence is expanding globally. The sound and light spectacle Impression-Third Sister Liu performed against the natural backdrop of the Guilin landscape has become a cultural brand of Guangxi’s natural beauty. Guangxi’s theater is also flourishing, worthy of its national drama reputation. Among local young writers, Dongxi, Guizi and Lifeng, Guangxi’s three musketeers of literature, are leading new generations of Chinese writers in their literary endeavors. Recently, for two years running, two of thethree musketeershave won the top prize of Chinese literature, the Lu Xun Literary Award, and the rise of this cohort of young local writers has also contributed to the rise of Guangxi literature In Chinese cinema history, it was the Guangxi Film Studio that first explored innovation in film and nurtured China’s fifth-generaticdirectors.
In traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, Guangxi was also the birthplace of two nationally and internationally known styles-the Lijiang River school and Bagui calligraphy.Guangxi’s comprehensive strength in publishing ranks 12th nationwide. Over the past decade, the region has won altogether 40 prizes at national book awards, and ranks among the provinces with the most book prizes. Guangxi has also made considerable achievements in the protection of cultural relics and intangible cultural heritage. A number of newly built libraries, cultural centers and museums have opened to the public on a free basis.
