There are five major ports in Liaoning at Dalian, Yingkou, Dandong, Jinzhou and Huludao sending more than 200 million tons of cargo to over 140 countries with Dalian serving as the largest port in the northeast of China. With two international airports and over 4,000 km of rail line, Liaoning is the major shipping hub for the area.
Agricultural and food production in Liaoning are another major pair of industries that bring in revenue. Fishing and seafood production include high value products like abalone, sea cumber, shrimp, oysters and shell fish as well as large amounts of freshwater fish. With large areas of farmland, Liaoning is also a major producer of rice and grains, fruits and vegetables and pharmaceutical and medicinal herbs. This has greatly influenced the production of beer and wine in the province which are another strong export.
Technology production and innovation are also becoming one of Liaoning’s greatest assets. There are over 1,100 research institutions covering everything from robotics to meteorology and seismic studies. Liaoning has created many economic and technological zones which have attracted large foreign investment from major enterprises such as Intel, Volkswagen and Hitachi. The province boasts now 78 universities creating a high level of educated workers destined for these advanced industries.
With all of this heavy industry, manufacturing and increased growth in technologydevelopment, Liaoning has focused attention on making the province more clean and ecological. There are nearly 100 waste water treatment plants in the province. Over 100 reservoir and water conservancy areas have also been constructed with large areas of wetlands and shorelines coming under state protection as well.
All of these factors have helped Liaoning become the largest economy in the northeast of China and the seventh highest in China.
