Development of Literati Painting in Yuan Dynasty
1 min readYuan dynasty was under the reign of Mongolian nobles.Although it lasted for less than 100 years,it ended the territory disruption since the Five Dynasties.The unification of country was propitious to the development and communication of economy and culture.In order to consolidate their reign,the Yuan rulers took measures to gain support from intellects of Han nationality and follow Han cultures and customs.They provided Han literati with courteous reception and even official positions.These measures objectively guaranteed the painters,most of whom were Hannationalities,a favorable environment to focus on brushwork creating.Some painters from the Southern Song dynasty refused to cooperate with the Yuan rulers.They painted to demonstrate their moral integrity and to express personal sentiment.
Paintings in this period gave priority to literati paintings,but landscape painting,flower-and-bird painting and figure painting gained development respectiely.As Yuan rulers promoted religion,temple murals appeared in largescales.There were excellent mural art works,for example,murals in the Yongle Palace Temple.
