Dress Style of the Song Dynasty

Like the other feudal dynasties，to maintain the difference of subjects in a hierarchical society，the rulers of the Song dynasty built up a series of dress systems，which included the strict regulations on dress styles，colors and materials.However，due to some economic and political elements，these regulations were not strictly followed by citizens in different classes.In this sense，the regulations failed to function well.

In the Song dynasty，the textile industry further developed so that the output and quality of textile were greatly increased，which provided a strong support to the development of dress culture.The brocade textile industry of the Song dynasty also entered its prime.The”Song brocade”of Suzhou，the”Yun brocade”of Nanjing，and the”Shu brocade”of Sichuan were all famous brocades that were quite popular among the people.Based on the dress features of the Tang dynasty，the silk textile industry also made some improvements.Unlike the bold，unconstrained and luxuriant styles of the Tang dynasty，the silk dress of the Song dynasty was elegant，graceful and soft，showing a concept of upholding the Confucianism.
