Folk Music of Townspeople
2 min readLike any other ancient nations;the primitive Chinese sang folk songs at hunting, sacrificial rites, wooing, wedding, and pasturing.People pursuedmusic for pleasure. The townspeople were more preoccupied by the“popular music”than by the“refined music”in spite of teachings of Confucianism.
Compared with the refined music, the popular music sought after was often music overridden by sensual stimulation,so that the mind of the people might be fully liberated, and that their pursuits for life and love might be fully displayed.
Guangcdong Music
Guangdong music is good at depicting the minor facets of life,as well as being closely connected with revealing traditional emotions. To appreciate it,one should not be on the lookout for the great themes of social life, but for descriptions of natural scenery and obiects, which bring a feeling of relaxation.
Hua’er Music
Hua’er is sung in the fields and mountains by different ethnic groups of people.Every spring, natives dressed in their unique costumes gather together to take part in the annual Hua’er Meet.Young men and women sing and woo each other with love songs. It usually starts with a young man’s initiation, and if the obiect of his interest responds by singing her admiration back to him,the song can last up to a few hours sometimes.
The Hua’er gathering is also a time when middle-aged and elderly people meet old friends to reminisce. But the ancient music, which originated from agricultural civilizations, has been severely damaged by industrialization in recent decades.
