1 min read

The four branches of Buddhists refer to “Bhikkhus”,”Bhikkhuni”,”Upasaka”

and”Upasika”. The monk, which is called Bhiksu in Sanskrit, may also betransliterated into the “man begging for food”who is a male Buddhist cultivating himself according to Buddhist doctrines in the secular world; the Nun, also named Bhiksuni in Sanskrit, is the “woman begging for food”who is a female Buddhist who does practices in the secular world.

The layman is also called Upsaka in Sanskrit which can be translated into the “devout man”who believes in Buddhism and cultivates himself at home; while the laywoman with a Sanskrit name of Upsika is translated into the “devout woman”who does practices also at home. The groups of people who are called the”devout men and women”refer to the latter two branches of Buddhists.
