2 min read

It’s good for a city to have its own music festival. It’s great to have more than one!

Beishan woke up from its 300-year slumber with the soulful melody of jazz streaming into the starry sky one magical night eight years ago. Now hosting two heavyweight music festivals that draw participation that is truly international, including the universally-loved, three-time Grammy winner Ricardo Vogt and his new band Vogt4Us, in the 2018 event. This historic village is a mind-blowing introduction to the urban charm and music madness of modern Zhuhai.

The quiet neighborhood was lit up again on the night of May 4 in 2018, with the passion of screaming fans beamed into the homes of people all over Zhuhai. Closing with the eclectic glory of World Music from Saharadja (Indonesia’s top world music band), two days were soaked in a palette of international rhythms that broke down global barriers and emanated love and peace.

The 2018 Beishan World Music Festival brought in eight world-renowned bands from seven countries/ regions that took everyone on a journey through the melodies of nations from around the world. The event saw the debut of SISAY, whose sincere, profound music, rooted in the mountains and rivers of Ecuador, is perfect match with the “Renaissance”of Beishan. An old friend of the music festival, Ricardo Vogt grabbed the audience’s ears again with his magic guitar developed exclusively to utilize a string that produces very characteristic and original sound.

The two-day revelry also included a plethora of related activities that used music as the “Esperanto” to inspire education, community redevelopment, architecture conservation and other art practices such as photography and painting. For music fans who missed out on the May carnival, the annual Zhuhai Jazz Music Festival is only five months away. The 2017 jazz party feasted the ears of the audience with a program glorified by six bands and Canadian pianist David Braid, considered one of his country’s most celebrated jazz players and a true”Renaissance man”when it comes to music.
