Greater Mekong Sub-Regional Cooperation Bearing New Fruit
1 min readThe Greater Mekong Sub-region that links China to southeast and south Asia is of great geographical importance. Under a 1992 proposal by the Asian Development Bank, six countries of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (Burma Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and China) held their first ministerial-level meeting on the active cooperation of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (gms) system. In November2o2, GMS held its first summit meeting in Phnom Penh,Cambodia, approving the Sub-regional Development Strategic Framework for the Next Decade.
Since the launch of GMS, more than 180 cooperation projects with a total investment of over US$10 billion have been actioned. In 2005, Guangxi made its formal entry to the GMS economic cooperation program, propelling the development and construction of a number of key projects focusing on transport, tourism, trade agriculture, industry, natural resources, and human resource development. Guangxi’s participation in GMS will undoubtedly enhance its international image, increase its level of opening-up, and advance itsattraction and outreach strategy.
