Yanhecheng Village haspreserved many historical structures.Entering the from street, one will see agate tower, marked No. 152, withengraved beams and painted columns.It features a stone flight of five steps,oppositely joined wall bricks, hip—upeaves with brick-cngraved ornaments,and tigerhead tiles. In front of the gateis a pair of stone piers. The pristinehouses, engraved gate towers, delicategate piers, and elegant screen walls areall impressive and retain stronghistorical elements.
A Place of Drama
Inside the village is a dramastage dating to the Qing Dynasty.Erected on a 1.5—meter—high stone The ancient stage. foundation and facin g north, the stage features a paraboloid roof and sculptures of auspiciousanimals on the ridgeline and other traits typical to ancient Chinese architecture. With its fa?ade open to the north, the stage is surrounded by stone walls on east, west, and south sides.
During the Ming and Qing periods, as one of the most important structures inYanhechcng, the stage served as the venue for sacrificial ceremonies and recreational eventsof the stationed troops. One can assume the stage brought much delight and comfort to thesoldiers stationed here, in pan relieving them of their homesickness.
