Anordinary rural meal, often comprised of a bowl of porridge, a plate of deep-fried peanuts,and a piece of pork pie, is a treat for city dwellers. Many opt to sit on the heated brick bedwhile enjoying the simple, yet flavorful meal,According to Secretary Wang, Zhuanghu Village, the second smallest in Bohai Township, comprises six hectares and 48 households. From the early 1950s to the l990s, the village mainlysubsisted on forestry and animal husbandry. Due to its location deep within the mountains,traffic and communications were problematic, and the villagers led a humble life. Commencedin 1998, the development of the Xiangshuihu Scenic Zone brought new opportunities to thevillage.
And with the nearby Mutianyu Great Wall and other historical and cultural attractions, aswell as a large production of apple, apricot, and chestnut, Zhuanghu Village enjoyed an advantagein developing folk-custom tourism. In 1998, three local households piloted the new tourismprogram. Seeing their success and growing fortunes, other villagers followed suit. By the end of2006, 30 tourist—accommodating households hosted 12,000 visitors and were generating morethan 600,000 yuan a year.
In 2007, Zhuanghu was designated as one of the pilot villages inHuairou District in the construction of new countryside.
