Over the years Hua Shan has become more tourist-friendly. A little village has sprouted at the foot of Hua Shan with over 25 stalls offering refreshments and local dishes. Some Hua Shan specialties include: wheat pastry with vegetables tables( type of cold noodle that looks like thick flat vermicelli but is usually made with potato powder; buckwheat noodles(qido mian); and sweet steamed pumpkin filled with rice, raisins, plums, peanuts, lotus and walnuts called babao nangua.

If you’re up on the mountain, any hotel will whip up a delicious meal, but be prepared to pay up to four times more. Try chicken cooked with sweet sauce and peppers,stir- fried beef with capsicum, leafy vegetables with mushrooms topped with oyster sauce at the Hua Shan North Peak Hotel.

 Souvenirs

Many of the small shops are cramped with souvenirs like fake rhinoceros horns and jade pieces, Hua Shan rocks and “friendship locks. Others tout more useful items like caps, sunglasses, binoculars and scarlet good-luck ribbons -apparently protection for a Memorable Experiences Watching the rosy sunrise and sunset. Having delicious, well-deserved dinner under the stars, away from city noises.

Hua county is the birthplace for Chinese Shadow Plays, an ancient art form combining opera singing, light, and silhouette. The shadow puppets are made with cowhide with movable joints and often carved with intricate decorations and patterns. Most souvenir shops sell the leather puppets, but it takes a bit of searching to find a genuine one.
