This region is the ancient Xixia district “Ningxia” means “peaceful Xixia”. In 1928, it was detached from Gansu and became separate province.In1954, Ningxia was incorporated into Gansu, but was separated from Gansu in 1958 and was reconstituted as an autonomous region for the Hui people. The abbreviation of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is “Ning”. Its capital is Yinchuan.
