Origin of “Peaceful Dove”

During the World War II period, Spanish painter Picasso resided in Paris. Picasso’s elderly neighbor Mish had a grandson who loved breeding dove. In 1940, Paris was seized by Hitler’s army. One day, Mish’s grandson was thrown downstairs by the German fascists, who died on the street. These cruel fascists also stabbed and killed all doves in the dove cage. Heartstricken Mish held bloody doves in both hands, and knocked on the door of Picasso’s house. He asked Picasso to draw the doves according to the alive style in order to memorize the poor grandson. With grief and indignation, Picasso drew a flfl ying dove which was the rudiment of “Peaceful Dove”. In November 1950, in commemoration of World Conference to Defend Peace, Picasso drew a dove holding olive branch in the mouth. Pablo Neruda (a famous Chilean poet) saw it, and named it “Peaceful Dove”. White and pure dove is recognized as “symbol of humankind peace”.
