1 min readWhen Chinese engineer Mao Yisheng and his team announced their intention to build a bridge over the Qiantang River in 1934,the idea was dismissed by many as mission impossible.However,it took the team only three years to unveil the groundbreaking structure.Unfortunately,the newly-built bridge had to be bombed as part of the anti-Japanese strategy on December 23,1937.The reconstruction was completed in 1953.
The 1,453-meter dual-purpose road-and-railway bridge is one of the two masterpieces of Mao Yisheng,the forefather of modern bridge engineering in China.His doctoral treatiseis treasured at the Hunt Library of Carnegie Mellon University,which constructed a statue of him on campus in his honor.The bridge has been serving the city for more than 70 years.
