Sanzao Crane Dance
1 min readOne of the crown jewels of Zhuhai’s cultural pride, the’Crane Dance”is a dying folk art that originated in the Sanzao area of southern Zhuhai. In ancient times, the vast mangrove forests, mudflats and marsh sprawls made the islands a food paradise for fowls and beasts. The locals'”crane totem’ evolved into a singing and dancing form that later became a standard program in the festival calendar of Sanzao. The dance team mimics the long-observed movements of the crane-such as foraging, preening, putting up the wing, frolicking and homing-under powerful, boisterous music and singing. Underneath the jubilant presentation is a strong current of solemnity expressed through three choreographic climaxes symbolizing the immortalization of the ‘cranes’ ascending to heaven.
