A dense network of tributaries covers the area south of the Yangtze River Delta, and the influence of all this water gives the local houses their serene and elegant appearance. Most of the houses are free-standing one and two-story wooden structures. They feature naturally well-lit interiors with excellent ventilation and courtyards enclosed all to within a security wall to both prevent theft and protect from fire. The houses are beautifully decorated:the brick gates are delicately engraved and the walls are covered in white tiles; very few other colors are used-a focus on simplicity.
