Shangrao has always been an agricultural city with a “short leg”in industry. In recent years, Shangrao has implemented the strategy of revitalizing economy by developing industry. It speeds up the construction of industrial zones as platform, introduces and promotes investment in Shangrao. The wonderful environment, abundant resources and excellent service has attracted plenty of investments to Shangrao. It has founded 11 industrial zones in succession. The proportion of industry to national economy has raised from 24.8% in 2000 to 36.1% in 2006; the added value of the six pillar industries (mechanism, structural material, food, exploitation and processing of non-ferrous metal, textile and garment, high and new-technology industries) has accounted for 77% among the added value of the whole city; the economy of the zones has quadrupled in the past three years, and there are two industrial zones (Guangfeng Economic Development Zone and Shangrao Economic Development Zone) that rank among the top ten industrial zones in Jiangxi.

Lying in the western suburb of Shangrao urban area,2.5 kilometers from the downtown, Shangrao Economic Development Zone was renamed and upgraded from Shangrao Industrial Park in 2006. It is a provincial development zone, and mandated to govern a county and an office. It covers 168 square kilometers with a planning area of 45 square kilometers and a population of over 70 thousand. In 2005, ShangraoEconomic Development Zone was praised as Provincial Advanced Industrial Zone.

In recent years, under the direction of the Municipal Committee and Government, based on the advantages of resources, location and low cost, ShangraoEconomic Development Zone aims to build an honest and mature development zone.

In accordance with the strategy of introducing core enterprises, creating core industries, constructing core region and improving its core competition, the zone insists on the guideline of focusing on investment to outside and stressing on service inside, in order to boost every program in the zone. Until the end of August in2006, the zone had built up 6.7 square kilometers with a total input of RMB 931 million. In the built-up area，the infrastructure of water，electricity，road and pipe network has been increasingly improved，and the functional programs have been carried out gradually.In 2006，the new input of infrastructure increased for building three new roads and expanding the zone by 2 million square meters reached RMB 230 million.

The infrastructure of the zone has been further improved，which can satisfy the needs of enterprises in the zone completely.

Shangrao Economic Development Zone draws investment with honesty，and makes them stay with good service.It emphasizes to introduce some leading enterprises with big scale and high and new-technology industries，with high technological content，low consumption of energy and environmental protection.Until September 2006，there are 234 enterprises setled down in the zone，among which 195 have started production and 20 have invested more than RMB 100 million.It has basically formed such characteristic industries as non-ferrous，mechanism，textile and garment，which has created stated scale efficiency and cluster effect.For example，there are 42 mechanism industries，and they received RMB 501 million from its main business during the past nine months，which covered 10%of the total，while there are 12 enterprises engaged in non-ferrous processing，and they got RMB 1.603 billion，32%of the total.From January to September in 2006，the zone gained an income of RMB 5.01 billion from its main business and industrial added value of RMB 1.25 billion；it introduced 58 new programs with a total domestic fund of RMB2.61 billion and foreign fund of USD 14.41 million；the tax submitted amounted to RMB 170 milion；it solved employment of about 26，280 people；its primary economic indicators listed from the third to the ninth respectively among the 30 provincial key industrial zones.It has become the chief platform of industrial cluster and development，a new economic growth polar of Shangrao.
