2 min readIn March of 1945, the Troupe attached to the China Central Movie Studio performed The Model Teacher of Myriad Ages by the playwright Zhang Junxiang, with the famous actress Bai Yang playing the leading role.
Even after the Lyceum changed its name to the Shanghai People’s Art Theatre in 1949, it still remained the center of Shanghai’s drama scene. The theatre nurtured the talents of such famous play-wrights as Xia Yan and Sha Ye, the renowned director Huang Zuolin, and many more. As a venue,the Lyceum was able to show one masterpiece after another, including many original debuts. In this re-spect, the illustrious tradition of the Lyceum continues on to this day.

In addition to staging plays and screening movies the Lyceum Theatre was used for concerts naip dances, operas, and more. In 1995, the Shangha ople’s Art Theatre merged with the Shanghai Youth Drama Troupe to form the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre(SDAC), which moved to a new building on Anfu Road which is more suitable formance. This move had a significant impact on the Lyceum, one good ace then, the Lyceum has taken the initiative to transnging venue and features a variety of shows like Shaoxing Opera, Shanghaio, marionettes, children’s’ dramas,talk shows, a performing history has attracted troupe ondon St. Martin’s troupe The Sokolsky Ballet Company performing at the Lyceum Theatre in 1948 Graduated from the Imperial Ballet School(now the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet)in St. Petersburg, Sokol-sky worked with the world’s finest ballerina, Anna Pavlova, when she performed in Europe. He and his wife, Ivgenia Balanova, opened a ballet schoolin Shanghai where they trained many outstanding students.
