Taoism and Chinese Medicine
1 min readAccording to Laozi, the Dao(the Way)is the source of the universe and all natural law.The Neijing further applied this concept to many basic doctrines of traditional Chinese medicine.Yin-Yang theory, referred to as the Dao of Yin and Yang, explains the characteristics and transformative nature of all things.
The Dao of Constructive,Protective,Ascending, and Descending Qi describes the circulation of Qi throughout the body. The Dao of Needles and Needling addresses the techniques ofacupuncture. The cultivation of health and longevity is described in terms of the progression of the seasons,as the Dao of Procreation,Growth,Harvest, and Storage(spring, summer, fall, and winter).
According to the Neijing, although the Dao cannot be directly perceived through the senses,it is presentin all things. From the macrocosm of Heaven and Earth to the microcosm of the”ten thousand things”that populate the universe, there is nothing that does not fall under its dominion.Human physiology and pathology are no exception. To understand the Dao is to grasp the source of life, and thus to master the prevention and treatment of disease.
