A Chinese saying goes that,”In heaven there is a paradise,on earth there are Suzhou and Hangzhou.”
uzhou,in East China’s Jiangsu Province,enjoys a particular renown for herlandscaped gardens.The gardens are not large but are fascinating in their delicate design,containing hills,ponds,pavilions,terraces,corridors,and towers.Called the Venice of the East,Suzhou has a high water table which supplies the vast number ofponds and streams throughout the city and it is these ponds that serve to focus the many elements of the garden within a small space.
2.The Humble Administrator’s Garden
The Humble Administrator’s Garden,one ofChina’s four most famous gardens,built in1509 during the Ming Dynasty.Covering an area of 12 acres,it is the largest one of all Suzhou gardens.
The garden consists of Eastern,Central and Western sections as well as some residences⑥of the former owners.The eastern part of which contains ponds,streams,rockeries,many kinds of trees and Chinese-style houses.
3.The Lion Grove Garden
Although the Lion Grove Garden is a small garden,it is truly exquisiteoin design,the rockeries imaginative.
Entering the garden,you will find stones in various interesting shapes.Look at them closely,they are lions:lying,sitting,slinking along,standing on hind legs,or embracing a ball made of strips@of silk.
4.The Surging Waves Pavilion
The Surging Waves Pavilion,covering an area of 10,656 square meters,is the oldest of the Suzhou gardens that can be traced back to the Northern Song Dynasty.The Surging Waves Pavilion emphasizes the harmony@between man made buildings and the natural environment.
Walking along the corridors that follows a path alongside the unique stone formations and strategically planted ancient trees,it seems walking in a primitive forest.
5.The Lingering Garden
The Lingering Garden is three hectares in size.Winding throughout the garden is a700-meter long corridor,on the walls of which are a great number of stone carvings and windows.
The Lingering Garden boasts the largest rock in Suzhou.It is six and a half meters high,weighs five tons and was transported from Lake Taihu four hundred years ago.Because ofits height and shape,it was named”Cloud-capped Peak”.
