The Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms

The period of political disunity between the Tang and the Song，known as the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period，lasted more than half a century，from 907 to 979.During this brief era，when China was in all respects a multistate system，five regimes succeeded one another rapidly in control of the old imperial heartland in northern China.During the same time，10 more stable regimes occupied sections of southern and western China，so the period is referred to as the Ten Kingdoms.
