The five sacred mountains in China
1 min readChina is famous for its beautiful mountains, among which the five sacred mountains are the most distinguished. They are: East Mountain, Mount Tai in Shandong Province, famous for its magnificence; West Mountain, Mount Hua in Shaanxi Province, especially famous for its awe-inspiring grandeur; South Mountain Mount Heng in Hunan Province, well-known for its elegance; Mount Heng in Shanxi Province, the northern one and also the peaceful and pure one; Middle Mountain, Mount Song located in Henan Province, well known for its steep cliffs and holy Taoism site. All are prized for their individuality and expressiveness. In history they were ancient China’s political, economic and cultural centres. Take Mount Tai as an example: There were in total 72 emperors from the Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties who built temples on it. And from the Qin to Qing Dynasty, according to the historical records, there were 12 emperors offering their worship on sacred Mount Tai.
